Haugh House is a small, tranquil residential care home in the vibrant Stockbridge area of Edinburgh, close to the Royal Botanic Garden. It has a balcony which is a suntrap in summer, with lovely views of the Water of Leith. The care home is modern and purpose-built, with spacious accommodation for up to 15 residents, and is managed by Jo Dickman and her team.
COMMUNITY
Haugh House has a calm, serene atmosphere and typically suits residents who enjoy their independence and privacy, with each room offering its own en-suite shower and kitchenette area, where they can make their own teas and coffees when entertaining their visitors.
Residents also have good links to the nearby Lifecare Centre in Cheyne St, which runs a programme of groups and activities we can link into. Café Life, situated within the Lifecare Centre, is also a popular venue for our residents for a spot of lunch or coffee and cake.
We are part of community efforts to recognise Stockbridge as a dementia-friendly area, working with Stockbridge Parish Church. Residents enjoy going to the Carol Service there, and some have longstanding links with their own local minister.
ACTIVITIES
Many of the residents at Haugh House have a professional background and enjoy relaxing, individual activities such as reading and watching films, or going out and about within the local community, supporting local businesses, such as Tariq’s grocery store. Tariq has been serving the community of Stockbridge for over 20 years and is a ‘weel kent’ face.
All staff at Haugh House get involved with activities, both in-house and out and about, accompanying residents to the hairdressers and barbers, going out for a walk along the Water of Leith or through the village.
In-house activities include games, puzzles, quizzes, and music sessions which are very popular. Visiting relatives are actively encouraged to get involved, and we welcome suggestions and input from everyone to ensure we provide a varied and stimulating atmosphere within the home for those who want to participate.
Newly opened pizza restaurant, Franco Manca, is also a popular venue of ours for a delicious sourdough pizza of a lunchtime or evening. Some residents are regular visitors to Stockbridge Library and Edinburgh Mobile Library services also visit the home once a month, supplying a selection of books, CDs or talking books for those who would rather not go out to the library.
The balcony at the back of the home overlooks the Water of Leith and is well used in summer for visits, or simply watching the world go by. Flower and vegetable planters are well established on our balcony and our residents help to look after them.
