Remembrance Day Activities at Peebles Care Home and St John’s Care Home

Posted on 01 December 2021

The staff and residents at Mansfield Care Homes this year marked Remembrance Sunday with special activities including crafts and reminiscence. This was particularly appreciated by some of our residents who saw active service.

At Peebles Care Home, many of the residents lived through the Second World War, with some seeing active service. Wellbeing Coordinator Claire says care home resident Alfred was a senior civil servant in the Ministry of Defence. “He served as a tank commander in the Normandy landings of 1944 and was awarded the Legion of Honour from the French president. Significant events hold lots of memories for our residents and those that saw active service often keep their medals with them.”

Craft activities are a regular feature at the care home and Claire says that for this year’s Remembrance Day, residents made poppies. “This needs skills in sewing and painting as well as fine attention to detail. The residents were pleased with their poppies and they made a good meaningful talking point.”

St John’s Care Home resident Jack attended the Remembrance Day ceremony at Melrose war memorial next to Melrose Parish Church in the company of Dr Murray and St John’s Wellness Coordinator, Denise Lissoni.

Many thanks to Mansfield Care Homes staff for the lovely photos.
