Eildon Tree Autumn Colour

Autumn Activities at Eildon House

Posted on 25 November 2020

It’s been a busy time at Eildon House in Edinburgh, with Halloween one of the autumn highlights and residents enjoying the changing colours round about, says Wellness Coordinator Fiona.

“We’ve had a busy time, and residents have been participating in various activities to keep everyone upbeat and entertained through the autumn. Ongoing is a wonderful idea to create a collage of photos taken of the magnificent horse chestnut tree in the playing fields opposite Eildon Street. The residents have been excited about this activity, and have enjoyed watching the stunning seasonal changes.”

With Eildon House being so close to the Botanic Gardens, the residents usually benefit from being able to get out and about in nature, so being able to keep in touch with the seasons during covid has been appreciated. They were also intrigued to hear about nearby news, Fiona says: “I showed them the amazing photo of a recent visitor to the Botanic Gardens; a giant blow-up monkey attached to the side of Inverleith House!!

Halloween is always a favourite time, with lots of traditional seasonal activities, says Fiona. “Everyone enjoyed decorating the house for Halloween, and the afternoon was spent amongst laughter and good spirits, commencing with some rather silly, but funny, Halloween jokes, before setting the mood and darkening the sitting-room to create a good atmosphere for the Halloween movie, Hocus Pocus! The residents loved the film, which was followed by a dunking for donuts activity that was great fun.”

Activities during the busy autumn have included soap-making, slate decoration and quiz sessions, with Lilian receiving the winner’s trophy after a lively game of bingo. Another highlight was a socially distanced visit from children from the local Orchard Nursery. “There was much excitement as both parties waved to each other, with the protection of the windows between them. It was just a quick visit, but residents told me they really loved seeing the children.”

Other autumn celebrations at Eildon House included the 64th wedding anniversary of resident Mary and her husband, Robin, which was a chance to hear about their wedding and life story.

Thank you to Fiona for the lovely photographs.
