Belleville Lodge Polish Day

Residents of Mansfield Care Home’s Belleville Lodge in Edinburgh recently celebrated a very special day of Polish-themed activities. While country-themed events are a regular occurrence at Belleville Lodge, this one had special significance for two Polish care staff, as well as the care home’s oldest resident, Zofia, who also hails from Poland.

Care staff member Agnes (Agnieszka) says, “At lunchtime, residents were treated to a range of delicious food prepared in the kitchen by chef Angela, while I advised on Polish cooking techniques learned from my family.” Chef Angela said: “Belleville Lodge residents always like to try new things and they really enjoyed the Polish bread, smoked sausage, salad, chicken broth and dumplings.” Agnieszka explained that for her and resident Zofia, “this was more than a tasty meal. We feel the emotions of our country when we prepare food, and it brought back memories of learning to cook in the kitchen at home.”

One of the savoury highlights of the lunch was pierogi, Polish filled dumplings with pan-fried crispy onions on top. There were also small Polish sandwiches as well as sweet cakes and biscuits. The dining room was decorated with red and white Polish flags and traditional music played in the background to add to the atmosphere.

After lunch, Agnieszka gave a short talk on the customs, people and special places of Poland. She explained that “it was more than just informative. It was a chance for me and my Polish colleagues to work together and share our memories and experiences with residents. There were lots of smiles and it was great to connect with everyone. Everyone enjoyed hearing about the custom of men kissing women’s hands when they meet.”

The day’s activities were rounded off with a delicious traditional Polish cherry sponge cake, along with Polish sandwiches and biscuits. Agnieszka said “I was very proud of the cake!”

Belleville Lodge matron Margaret Russell said all the residents really enjoyed the day and finding out all about Poland.
