International theme day at Mansfield Care Homes

International theme days at Mansfield Care

Posted on 17 October 2019

Lots of the Mansfield Care homes have themed days when they spend time enjoying international culture, music and food, with favourites including Chinese Night, Italian night and, of course, Scotland’s own St Andrew’s night!

International theme days are fun for residents as they create a talking point and imaginative stimulation, as well as bringing a taste of travel and happy memories for residents who have been overseas. Themes can be chosen to reflect a resident’s interests and it’s also a chance for our chefs to cook something special.

Recently a US-themed day was held at Belleville Lodge. “Usually, we have a themed day once a month,” explains Matron Margaret Russell. “This time, we decked out the dining room with US flags and table decorations, and had a lunch with burgers and hot dogs. Then I gathered some pictures and facts from the internet and sat down with the residents for a chat about America.”

As she explains, some residents are well travelled and enjoy reminiscing about their holidays. “Mardie lived in Chicago and Jean spent time in New York, so it brought back happy memories and they really enjoyed discussing where they’d been and what they’d done.”

The US-themed day was also a chance to listen to American music and sing along to Frank Sinatra tunes, says Margaret. “And in the afternoon, we had tea with doughnuts and popcorn, and a chat about Hollywood films.

Theme days are something different for the residents, and they’re great for thinking, discussion and memory. The ladies really enjoyed the chat and, of course, the food!”

Many thanks to Mansfield Care staff for the lovely photos.
