Summer at Peebles Care Home

It’s been a busy time for outdoor and indoor activities at Peebles Care Home, with lots of opportunities to enjoy the better weather as well as participate in drama workshops and cheer on the Wimbledon hopefuls!

Dawyck Garden outing

Martin, Ann, Helen, Valerie and Elsie enjoyed a fantastic visit to Dawyck Botanic Garden in the middle of July. We had typical Scottish summer weather – cool with drizzle! However, it was perfect for enjoying the lush green vistas on our drive through the countryside. Although sunshine would have been lovely, it was just the right sort of day for a warm fruit scone (with jam and cream, of course) and a good cup of coffee! Can’t go wrong with that.
The Dawyck studio was also a delight, with all its video features, and the ladies loved browsing the unusual gift selections in the shop. Our next trip will be on Friday 2nd August.

Trishaw Rides

We continue to enjoy regular outings courtesy of Cycling Without Age; a charity organisation which offers trishaw rides for elderly people living in the local community. Our pilots, Karen and Andy, were more than happy to cycle our residents around the lovely riverside area on the beautiful afternoon of Saturday 6th July and we look forward to enjoying many more summer days out on the trishaw.

Wimbles and Pimms Party

We had superb fun cheering on Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic at our annual ‘Wimbles and Pimms’ Party on Sunday 14th July. On what became the longest Wimbledon Men’s Final ever, we enjoyed traditional Pimms cocktails and Eton Mess meringues. Despite overwhelming support for Roger Federer, the spectacular performances from both players had us all agreeing that it was a tremendous shame there had to be a loser at all!

The Memory Jar – Creative Peebles Festival

In the Spring, we enjoyed a fantastic three-week block of drama workshops, delivered by theatre director, Clare Prenton. The exciting and highly engaging sessions culminated in five well-rehearsed monologues performed by professional actors, Vivien Reid and Scott Noble, directed by Clare. The monologues were based on the reminiscence work we had been carrying out with Clare over the course of the workshops.

We are thrilled to learn that the Magic Moments drama/theatre writing project has been so well received that it will be included in this year’s Creative Peebles Festival at the Eastgate Theatre. The group of plays created and developed with our residents is billed as ‘The Memory Jar’ and we look forward to seeing them showcased to the public on Monday 26th August!
