What’s ahead at Mansfield Care in 2020
Posted on 05 February 2020
The new decade is now well underway and Mansfield Care is looking ahead to some new developments in personalised care for residents and staff development. Here’s an overview from Chief Executive Officer Andrew Hume:
“We have had a good year in 2019, continuing to provide the highest quality of care for residents. Our Care Inspectorate reports have been consistently good, with high grades, and we have again improved our grades overall.”
“That said, we are always striving to improve and provide the best possible care and environment for residents and staff. Sustainability and consistency of care are vital here. We are fortunate to have very committed long-term staff who help to ensure continuity for residents, and one of our goals for 2020 is to develop staff training further.”
Staff training and CPD e-learning
“Our staff training levels are already exceptionally high, but we want to encourage staff to go further. SVQ 2 is the typical qualification level in care homes, and we are striving for staff to achieve SVQ 3. One way we are doing this is through flexible e-learning which staff can access at different times. They can, for example, study online modules in medical topics such as infection control on their phones or computer, and complete tests and assessment. This kind of training doesn’t replace hands-on group training, but it does develop staff knowledge in technical areas and fits in well with their shifts and schedules.”
Wellness Coordinators
“One of the big successes of 2019 has been the programmes of activities in homes, and the expanded role of our Wellness Coordinators. Each home has a different community and residents have different wishes, but everyone really appreciates our visitors, including young people and therapets. Residents are involved in helping the wellness coordinators to decide programmes of activities such as music, crafts and reminiscence. A highlight in 2019 included a visit by Zoolab therapets to Galahill House and St Johns. Another very special day was when Colin Mclean and his wife Helen renewed their marriage vows at Eildon House.”
Innovation in Care Planning, Delivery and Communication
“All residents have personalised care plans and we have been looking at ways to use IT to make them portable and quicker to use and update. So one of the developments ahead for 2020 is the use of secure iPads with e-care plans and medication cycles, including photos of each resident and notes on preferences. Each resident has a new medication cycle every four weeks, which is a complex part of our service calling for the utmost accuracy and accountability. So this will help with efficiency and interaction with visiting care professionals and bodies.”
Care Home Communication
“Communication with families and friends is another cornerstone of Mansfield Care, and again, we have drawn on IT to help. We have improved our website and are using a secure Instagram page for updates for relatives. Families have been saying they appreciate the immediacy and engagement and we are planning to develop this further.
I’d like to take the opportunity to wish all residents, staff and friends and families all the best for the coming year.”
